Braden Smith (finally) signs two-way contract with Pacers

The Indiana Pacers have finally locked in Purdue guard Braden Smith, signing him to a two-way contract nearly two months after the draft. The move had been expected for weeks, but the paperwork took longer than usual to finalize. Smith, who went undrafted in June, will split time between the Pacers and their G League affiliate, the Indiana Mad Ants.

Smith was a four-year starter at Purdue, where he became one of the most decorated point guards in program history. He finished his college career with over 2,000 points and 800 assists, leading the Boilermakers to a national championship game appearance in 2024. His court vision and ability to control tempo made him a fan favorite in West Lafayette, and many thought he would hear his name called on draft night. That did not happen, but the Pacers saw enough value to bring him into their system.

The two-way contract allows Smith to spend up to 45 days with the NBA team while playing the bulk of his season in the G League. He will likely get a chance to compete for backup minutes behind Tyrese Haliburton, though the Pacers already have several guards on the roster. For Smith, the opportunity is about proving he belongs at the next level. His shooting improved every year in college, and his basketball IQ is off the charts. The question is whether his athleticism and defensive foot speed can hold up against NBA guards.

Pacers fans have been waiting for this signing to become official since July. Now that it is done, Smith can focus on training camp and earning a role. He will wear number 3, the same number he wore at Purdue. The team has not announced any additional roster moves, but Smith's addition fills one of their two-way slots. The other remains open, giving the front office flexibility as the season approaches.
