Djokovic Remains Unbeaten in Beijing After Win Over Zverev

Djokovic Remains Unbeaten in Beijing After Win Over Zverev

Age is supposed to slow a tennis player down. Nobody has told Novak Djokovic.

At 39, the Serb eliminated world No. 2 Alexander Zverev in the China Open quarterfinals and extended a streak in Beijing with no Open Era precedent. Djokovic is now 32-0 at the tournament. No player in the Open Era has won more matches at a single event without ever losing one.

The match against Zverev was not a routine affair. The German pushed Djokovic through long rallies and traded breaks early in the second set. But the Serb raised his level when it mattered, converting his chances and closing out the contest in straight sets.

Djokovic has not dropped a set all week. His movement, return of serve and court coverage remain at a level few players half his age can match. The victory sets up a semifinal clash and keeps alive his bid for another title in the Chinese capital.

Zverev, who arrived in Beijing in strong form, struggled to find answers against Djokovic's consistency. The loss ends his run at the event and leaves questions about how anyone can stop the veteran on this court.

For Djokovic, the numbers keep growing. The streak stands alone in the Open Era, and each win adds another layer to a record that may never be matched.
