Former Rutgers Defensive End Jamil Merrell Passes Away at 36

Jamil Merrell, a former defensive end and team captain for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, has passed away at the age of 36. The university confirmed the news on Monday, though no cause of death has been released publicly.

Merrell played for Rutgers from 2007 through 2011, a period that saw the program rise to national relevance under head coach Greg Schiano and later Kyle Flood. He was a key part of the defensive line rotation during his early years and eventually earned a starting role. By his senior season, Merrell was voted a team captain, a testament to his leadership and work ethic on and off the field.

Over his college career, the 6-foot-4, 255-pound lineman recorded 96 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 7.5 sacks. He was known for his relentless motor and ability to disrupt opposing backfields. After going undrafted in 2012, Merrell signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets but did not make the final roster.
