The Los Angeles Lakers have kept their interest in Jonathan Kuminga fairly public, but the chances of actually landing him before the trade deadline are starting to fade. What once looked like a possible move to shake up the roster has turned into a waiting game that may not end in their favor.
Kuminga, a restricted free agent this summer, has been the subject of trade chatter for weeks. The Lakers see him as a young, athletic forward who could bring energy and scoring off the bench or even step into a bigger role. But the Golden State Warriors are not making it easy. They have been reluctant to part with him unless the offer blows them away, and so far, the Lakers have not put together a package that moves the needle.
The problem is the Lakers do not have a ton of assets to work with. Their future draft picks are limited, and they are not eager to give up key role players like Austin Reaves or Rui Hachimura in a deal that might not push them over the top. The Warriors, meanwhile, are in no rush. They can hold onto Kuminga and match any offer he gets in free agency, which gives them all the leverage.
There is also the question of fit. Kuminga has talent, but he has not always been consistent. The Lakers need players who can contribute right away, not projects who need time to develop. That makes the deal less appealing from their side too.
As the deadline gets closer, the buzz around this trade has quieted down. It is not dead, but it is hanging by a thread. Unless something changes in the next few days, Lakers fans should probably get used to the idea that Kuminga will not be wearing purple and gold this season.
