ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The state's top athletic talents took center stage Saturday night as the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame welcomed its Class of 2025. This year's group features a mix of gridiron greats and Olympic medalists, headlined by former University of Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones and steeplechase star Courtney Frerichs.
Jones, a native of Artesia, rewrote the record books during his college career with the Sooners. He finished as the program's all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns, later spending time in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jacksonville Jaguars. Frerichs, who grew up in Nixa, Missouri, but competed for the University of New Mexico, became a household name after winning a silver medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She also holds the American record in the event.
The ceremony honored a diverse group of athletes and contributors who have left a lasting mark on New Mexico sports. Other inductees included standout performers from basketball, baseball, and track and field, as well as coaches and administrators who helped shape the state's athletic landscape. The event drew a packed crowd of former teammates, family members, and fans, all eager to celebrate the achievements of the latest class.
The New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame continues to recognize those who have brought pride and recognition to the state through their dedication and excellence in competition.
