Steelers roster spotlight: Can Ryan McCollum secure a backup role?

With the 2026 season drawing near, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the middle of evaluating their depth across the offensive line. One name that keeps coming up in those internal discussions is Ryan McCollum, a versatile interior lineman who is fighting for a clear role on the final 53-man roster.

McCollum has been with the team for a couple of seasons now, mostly bouncing between the practice squad and the active roster. He has seen limited regular-season action, but the coaching staff has always liked his football IQ and his ability to play both center and guard. That flexibility is his biggest selling point. In a league where teams often dress only seven or eight offensive linemen on game day, having a guy who can step in at multiple spots without a drop-off in communication is valuable.

The question is whether McCollum can show enough consistency in training camp and the preseason to beat out the other backups. The Steelers have a clear starter at center, but the depth behind him is not set in stone. McCollum will need to prove he can hold his own against starting-caliber defensive tackles, especially in pass protection. His snap accuracy and ability to pick up stunts will be under the microscope.

He also faces competition from younger draft picks and undrafted free agents who are hungry for a chance. McCollum does not have the flashy pedigree, but he has the experience in the system. That alone gives him a slight edge heading into the summer workouts. If he can stay healthy and avoid the mental mistakes that have plagued him in past preseasons, he has a real shot to earn a backup jersey. If not, he could find himself on the outside looking in once again. The next few weeks will be crucial for his NFL future.
