Steelers updated mock draft after the Broderick Jones trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers shook up their draft board this week by sending a first-round pick to the New York Jets for offensive tackle Broderick Jones. That move changes everything about how the team approaches the upcoming NFL Draft, and our latest mock reflects that new reality.

With the first-round pick gone, the Steelers now hold selections in rounds two through seven. The biggest need is no longer tackle, but the offensive line still needs work. Specifically, the right side of the line is a glaring hole. Jones is expected to slot in on the left side, but right tackle remains a question mark.

In this mock, we have Pittsburgh using its second-round pick on a plug-and-play starter at right tackle. The name to watch is a big, physical blocker from the SEC who has the footwork to handle speed rushers and the power to open running lanes. He is not a project. He can start from day one, which is exactly what the Steelers need after trading away premium capital.

The rest of the draft focuses on depth. The Steelers still need a cornerback who can play outside, a linebacker with coverage skills, and a wide receiver who can win contested catches. They also could use a developmental defensive tackle to rotate behind their starters.

The trade for Jones was a bold statement. The front office clearly believes the offensive line is the key to getting back to contention. Now the draft has to deliver on that promise. If they land that right tackle in round two, the unit looks significantly better than it did a week ago. If they miss, the pressure on Jones and the rest of the line will be enormous. Either way, this draft is now about supporting the line, not rebuilding it from scratch.
