OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kaitlyn Terry came through with the go-ahead RBI against her former squad, lifting Texas Tech to an 8-7 victory over UCLA in nine innings on Sunday at the Women's College World Series. The win keeps the No. 11 Red Raiders alive in the double-elimination tournament.
Terry, who transferred from UCLA after last season, singled in the top of the ninth to break a 7-7 tie. The hit capped a back-and-forth battle that saw both teams trade leads multiple times. Texas Tech jumped ahead early, but UCLA answered with a four-run fourth inning to take control. The Red Raiders clawed back, tying the game in the sixth and forcing extras.
In the bottom of the ninth, UCLA threatened again, putting a runner in scoring position, but Texas Tech pitcher NiJaree Canady shut the door with a strikeout to end the game. Canady worked the final three innings in relief, allowing just one hit.
Texas Tech now faces Alabama on Monday in an elimination game. The winner advances, while the loser goes home. For Terry, the win carried extra weight. She spent two seasons with the Bruins before transferring to Lubbock, and her clutch hit silenced a pro-UCLA crowd at Devon Park.
The Red Raiders are making their first WCWS appearance since 2013 and have already matched their win total from that trip. They will need another strong performance against the Crimson Tide to keep their season alive.
