Western’s fall sports teams come in with high expectations for upcoming season

Athletes reported to campus on August 9 and have already started practicing ahead of the first competitions later this month. Coaches and players alike are carrying a noticeable sense of optimism into the new season, with several teams expected to make deep runs in their respective conferences.

The football program, coming off a strong finish last year, returns a core group of starters on both sides of the ball. The offensive line is bigger and more experienced, and the quarterback battle in camp has been competitive, pushing everyone to raise their level. Defensively, the secondary looks faster, and the front seven has shown good depth in early scrimmages.

On the soccer side, the women's team brings back its top two scorers and added a few transfers who have already made an impression in practice. The men's squad, meanwhile, is leaning on a veteran back line and a goalkeeper who started every match last season. Both teams are aiming for home playoff games, and the early schedule will test them right away.

Volleyball also enters the year with high hopes. The roster is balanced between seasoned upperclassmen and a talented freshman class that has injected energy into the gym. The setter position is deep, and the outside hitters have shown improved consistency at the net.

Cross country and golf are also in the mix, with several runners and players posting personal bests during summer training. The coaching staff has emphasized health and smart pacing early on, knowing the conference meets in October will be where it counts.

With opening day just weeks away, the mood around the athletic complex is focused but relaxed. The work has been done in the offseason, and now it is about execution. Fans should have plenty to cheer about this fall.
