Kansas State Defense Shows Fight Before Fading Late

The Kansas State defense held its ground for much of the game, keeping the team within striking distance through three quarters. The unit flew to the ball, tackled well in space, and forced several punts that gave the offense chances to build momentum. For long stretches, the defense looked like the backbone of the team.

That changed in the fourth quarter. Fatigue set in, and the depth chart concerns that lingered in the preseason became visible on the field. The rotation thinned out along the defensive line, and the pass rush lost its bite. Missed assignments in the secondary opened throwing lanes, and the opponent capitalized with sustained drives that chewed up clock and points.

The late fade raised questions about conditioning and rotation. Coaches have leaned on a core group of starters, but the drop-off to the second unit remains steep. Building trust in the backups will be critical as the schedule gets tougher.

There were positives to take away. The linebackers played with discipline, and the secondary forced a turnover that kept hope alive. Still, closing games requires four full quarters of execution. The defense proved it can compete. Now it has to prove it can finish.
