As the dust settles on the NFL offseason, analysts are looking back at moves not made. For the New England Patriots, a team in a clear rebuilding phase, two particular trade opportunities stand out as potential missteps in their roster construction strategy.
The first involved Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. Placed under the franchise tag and seemingly available for the right price, Higgins represented a prime chance to acquire a proven, young number-one receiver for quarterback Drake Maye. His physical play style and contested-catch ability would have immediately transformed a lackluster receiver room, providing the new franchise quarterback with a true top target from day one.
Secondly, the Patriots could have been more aggressive in addressing their offensive line. A potential deal for established San Francisco 49ers right tackle Mike McGlinchey before his free agency move to Denver was a missed avenue. Securing a veteran anchor for the offensive line would have been a monumental step in protecting their investment at quarterback and establishing a stronger foundation for the running game.
By opting for more conservative paths, the Patriots have left clear holes on their depth chart. While the draft brought future talent, the failure to land a veteran playmaker and a stalwart lineman via trade may place an unnecessary burden on their rookie quarterback and slow the offensive revival fans are hoping to see this fall.
