The Toronto Blue Jays suffered another tough defeat on Tuesday night, falling 7-6 to the New York Yankees in a game that slipped through their fingers in the late innings. For most of the night, it looked like the Jays were in control. They took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning, and the bullpen seemed ready to hold the line.
Adam Macko came on to start the seventh and quickly got the first two outs. That is when manager John Schneider made a move. With Aaron Judge stepping to the plate, Schneider went to the bullpen and brought in right-hander Yariel Rodriguez. The decision made sense on paper. Judge is far more dangerous against left-handed pitching, and a righty-righty matchup seemed like the safer bet.
But baseball does not always follow the script. Rodriguez struggled to find the zone and the Yankees took advantage. A walk, a hit, and a few defensive miscues later, the lead was gone. New York pushed across four runs in the inning, turning a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 advantage. The Jays tried to rally in the ninth, scoring one run and bringing the tying run to the plate, but they could not finish the job.
It was another frustrating night for a team that has seen too many close games slip away. The loss drops the Jays further back in the standings and raises more questions about bullpen management and late-inning execution. For a club trying to stay in the playoff race, these are the kinds of games they simply have to win.
