The Chicago Cubs put together their most complete performance of the young season on Wednesday, pounding Dodgers starter Gavin Wrobleski and cruising to a lopsided victory. The loss extends Los Angeles's losing streak to four games, a skid that has exposed some early cracks in the team's starting rotation and bullpen.
Wrobleski lasted just a few innings before being chased from the mound. The Cubs hitters worked deep counts, drove up his pitch total, and then teed off on anything left over the plate. By the time the Dodgers went to the bullpen, the game was already out of reach. Chicago scored in multiple innings, stringing together hits and taking advantage of a few defensive miscues that have become all too common for Los Angeles this week.
The Dodgers offense did not do much to help. They managed a handful of runs, but most of the damage came after the game had already been decided. The team left several runners in scoring position and failed to deliver a big hit when it mattered. That has been a recurring issue during this losing streak.
Manager Dave Roberts said after the game that the team needs to reset and focus on the fundamentals. He pointed to the starting pitching as the main concern, noting that the rotation has not been giving the team a chance to win lately. The Dodgers will look to stop the slide in the series finale, but they will need a much better effort from both the pitching staff and the lineup to avoid a sweep.
