Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley made it clear this week that he is not a fan of joint practices between NFL teams. Speaking to reporters, Barkley did not hold back when asked about the growing trend of teams holding combined workouts during training camp.
"I just don't see the value in it," Barkley said. "You're out there trying to get your own work in, and you've got another team across the field running drills. It gets messy. Guys get into fights, tempers flare, and honestly, it takes away from what you're trying to accomplish."
Barkley, who joined the Eagles this offseason after spending his first six seasons with the New York Giants, pointed out that the risk of injury is a major concern. He noted that players are already pushing their bodies hard in camp, and adding an unfamiliar opponent into the mix only raises the chance of something going wrong.
"You're supposed to be building chemistry with your own guys," he added. "Instead, you're worried about some defensive end from another team trying to make a name for himself by taking a cheap shot. It's not worth it."
The veteran running back also questioned the idea that joint practices help teams prepare for real games. He argued that the intensity and structure of a regular season matchup simply cannot be replicated in a shared practice setting.
"People say it's good to see different looks," Barkley said. "But you can get that from your own scout team. You don't need to bring in another squad to get that done."
His comments come as several NFL teams, including the Eagles, have participated in joint sessions this summer. While some coaches and players view them as a useful tool for evaluation and competition, Barkley clearly believes the downsides outweigh any potential benefits.
"I get it, some guys like it," he said. "But for me, I'd rather keep it simple. Show up, do your job, and get ready for the season. That's what matters."
