Injuries shadow Panthers as team scrimmages in front of 40,000 fans

Injuries shadow Panthers as team scrimmages in front of 40,000 fans

The Carolina Panthers made a roster move on Tuesday, signing free agent tight end Chamon Metayer to a deal, according to the team. The addition comes as the club deals with a banged-up position group heading into the final stretch of the preseason.

Metayer, who went undrafted out of Colorado in 2024, spent time with the Arizona Cardinals and Miami Dolphins during his rookie campaign but has yet to appear in a regular season game. He is a big-bodied target at six-foot-five and 255 pounds, offering the kind of size that could help in the red zone and as an inline blocker. The Panthers are likely hoping he can provide immediate depth while some of their regulars heal up.

The move comes on the heels of a weekend scrimmage in front of roughly 40,000 fans at Bank of America Stadium, where the team showed some promise on both sides of the ball but also saw a few key players leave with injuries. Head coach Dave Canales did not offer a detailed update on the injured players after practice, but the front office clearly felt the need to bring in another body at the position.

Carolina already has Tommy Tremble and Ian Thomas on the roster, but both have dealt with their own health issues in recent seasons. Metayer will likely get a long look in the final preseason game as the coaching staff evaluates whether he can stick on the practice squad or even the active roster. For now, he is just happy to have a chance to compete.
